कार्तिक माह के शुक्ल पक्ष की चतुर्दशी को बैकुण्ठ चतुर्दशी व्रत या बैकुण्ठ चौदस व्रत के नाम से जाना जाता हैं । मान्यता हैं , कि इस दिन स्वर्ग के द्वार हरी भक्तों के लिए खुले होते हैं ।
बैकुण्ठ चतुर्दशी व्रत में भगवान शिवजी और विष्णुजी का पूजन किया जाता हैं । बैकुण्ठ चतुर्दशी के दिन भगवान विष्णु का पूर्ण विधि – विधान से पूजन – अर्चन करना चाहिए । इस दिन भगवत गीता एवं श्रीसुक्त का पाठ करना विशेष लाभप्रद होता है । विद्वानों का मत हैं की बैकुण्ठ चतुर्दशी के दिन श्रीविष्णु का पूज एवं श्रीविष्णु की कथा का श्रवण करने से मनुष्य के समस्त पापों का नाश होता है । विष्णु मंत्र का जाप एवं स्तोत्र का विधि – विधान से पाठ करने से मनुष्य को बैकुण्ठ की प्राप्ति होती है ।
बैकुण्ठ चतुर्दशी पौराणिक कथा के अनुसार एक बार नारद जी ने भगवान श्री विष्णु से प्रश्न किया भक्ति व मुक्ति का सरल उपाय क्या हैं । नारद जी के का प्रश्न सुनकर भगवान श्री विष्णु जी ने कहां , हे देवर्षि , कार्तिक शुक्ल पक्ष की चतुर्दशी को जो मनुष्य व्रत रखते हैं , और पूर्ण श्रद्धा व भक्ति से मेरा पूजन – अर्चन करते हैं । उन्हें मेरी प्रसन्नता से बैकुण्ठ की प्राप्ति होती हैं।
बैकुण्ठ चतुर्दशी व्रत का विशेष लाभ प्राप्ति हेतु प्रातः स्नानादि से निवृत्त होकर व्रत का संकल्प करना चाहिए । शास्त्रों मान्यता के अनुसार इस दिन यदि कोइ मनुषय एक सहस्त्र ( एक हजार ) कमल पुष्पों से भगवान श्री विष्णु और शिवजी का पूजन – अर्चन करते हैं , उन्हें संसार के समस्त बंधनों से मुक्ति मिलती हैं , और उन्हें अंत समय में बैकुण्ठ की प्राप्ति होती हैं ।
कार्तिक शुक्ल चतुर्दशी अर्थात बैकुण्ठ चतुर्दशी भगवान विष्णु तथा शिवजी के संयुक्त पूजन का प्रतीक है । शास्त्रोक्त मतानुसार एक बार भगवान विष्णुजी काशी में भगवान शिवजी को एक सहस्त्र ( हजार ) स्वर्ण कमल के पुष्प चढ़ाने का संकल्प करते हैं । लेकिन जब अनुष्ठान का समय आता हैं , तब शिवजी , विष्णुजी की परीक्षा लेने के उद्देश्य से एक स्वर्ण पुष्प कम कर देते हैं । पुष्प कम होने की बात विष्णुजी को ज्ञात होती ही वह अपने दोनों कमल नयनों को स्मरण करके अपना एक नेत्र शिवजी को अर्पित करने के लिए तैयार होते हैं । विष्णुजी की श्रद्धा भक्ति देखकर भगवान शिव प्रकट होते हैं , आज से कार्तिक मास की इस शुक्ल पक्ष की चतुर्दशी बैकुण्ठ चतुर्दशी के नाम से प्रसिद्ध होगी । मान्यता हैं की इसी दिन शिवजी ने विष्णुजी को करोड़ो सूर्य की कांति के समान सुदर्शन चक्र भेट किया था ।
Chaturdashi of Shukla Paksha of Kartik month is known as Baikuntha Chaturdashi or Baikunth Chaudas. It is believed that on this day the gates of heaven are open for all devotees.
Lord Shiva and Vishnu are worshiped during the Baikuntha Chaturdashi fast(vrat). On the day of Baikuntha Chaturdashi, Lord Vishnu should be worshiped with full method – legislation. It is especially beneficial to recite Bhagavad Gita and Shrisukta on this day. according to Scholars, on the day of Baikuntha Chaturdashi worshiping Shri Vishnu and listening to the story of Shri Vishnu, destroy all the sins of devotees.
Chanting of lord Vishnu Mantra and by recitation of hymns, a person gets to the Baikuntha(heaven).
According to the legendary story of Baikuntha Chaturdashi, Narada(saint) once asked Lord Vishnu what are the simple steps of devotion and liberation. Hearing the question of Narada ji, Lord Shri Vishnu ji said, O Devarshi, to the Chaturdashi of Kartik Shukla Paksha, who keep fast, and worship me with pure devotion and reverence. They get Baikuntha with my happiness. To get the special benefit of Baikuntha Chaturdashi Vrat, one should resolve to fast after get bath in the morning.
According to the scriptures, on this day, if devotees worship Lord Shree Vishnu and Shiva with a thousand (one thousand) lotus flowers, they get freedom from all the shackles of the world, and in the end, they get Baikuntha(heaven).
Kartik Shukla Chaturdashi means Baikuntha Chaturdashi is a symbol of joint worship of Lord Vishnu and Shiva. According to the scriptures, once Lord Vishnu resolves to offer a thousand (thousand) golden lotus flowers to Lord Shiva in Kashi(town). But when the time comes for the ritual, Shiva reduces(hide) a golden flower for the purpose of taking the test of lord Vishnu. As soon as lord Vishnu is aware of the diminution of the flower, he is ready to offer his one eye to lord Shiva by remembering both of his eyes(kamal-nayan) . Lord Shiva appears on seeing the devotion of Vishnu,and declared that from today onwards, Chaturdashi of this Shukla Paksha of Kartik month will be famous as Baikuntha Chaturdashi. It is believed that on this day, Shiva offered Vishnuji a Sudarshan Chakra like the radius of millions of suns.
